Jane Goodall

Dame Jane Goodall, DBE, PhD, (born 3 April 1934 as Valerie Jane Morris Goodall) is an English UN Messenger of Peace, primatologist, ethologist, and anthropologist. She is well-known for her 45-year study of chimpanzee social and family interactions in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania, and for founding the Jane Goodall Institute.

Quotes:

"The greatest danger to our future is apathy."

"Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved."

"The least I can do is speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves."

"Chimpanzees have given me so much. The long hours spent with them in the forest have enriched my life beyond measure. What I have learned from them has shaped my understanding of human behavior, of our place in nature."

Florence Nightingale

A pioneer in the nursing field, she established herself as a competent nursing administrator during the Crimean War, where her insistence on sanitary conditions cut the death rate considerably. She continued to advance the field in her later years, providing better health service and opportunities for women at the same time.

Quotes:

"I can stand out the war with any man."

"Women never have a half-hour in all their lives (excepting before or after anybody is up in the house) that they can call their own, without fear of offending or of hurting someone. Why do people sit up so late, or, more rarely, get up so early? Not because the day is not long enough, but because they have 'no time in the day to themselves.' [1852] "

Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking has been called the most brilliant theoretical physicist since Albert Einstein . His work concentrates on the puzzling cosmic bodies called black holes and extends to such specialized fields as particle physics , supersymmetry, and quantum gravity . The origin and fate of the universe are a central concern of Hawking's work. Though few people are able to understand these abstruse subjects.

Quotes:

"We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special."

"My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all."

"The whole history of science has been the gradual realization that events do not happen in an arbitrary manner, but that they reflect a certain underlying order, which may or may not be divinely inspired."
